Labastide Espairbaïrenque, Aude

Chestnuts - or chataignier - grow on the higher slopes of La Montagne Noire. Originally planted in this area to produce wood for use in construction and fencing, the chestnuts themselves are now a valuable annual crop. In August the chestnuts are still quite small, and they are not harvested until the middle of October.
